J is for Jack

A sequence of four connected images wrap around the page, telling the story of Jack and his little black bag. At top, in an attic, two young women struggle with Jack, an older man brandishing a knife. The sisters are wearing 1910s house dresses, Jack wears an old Inverness coat. One sister attempts to wrestle the knife from Jack’s hand. There are cuts on her face and arms and her dress is soaked in blood. The other woman approaches Jack from behind, swinging a rocking chair over his head. A black bag rests on a blood-spattered bed in the foreground. In the next image, Jack is seen leaping from a large Second Empire-style Victorian house. the sisters shout at him from an attic window, The preceding two images are contained in a speech bubble coming from a very old woman in a 1970s caftan. She sits in the rocking chair seen earlier, the black bag on her lap. Scars on her face and arms indicate that she has lived the story she is telling. Children (presumably, her great-grandchildren) surround her, fascinated with the bag. She waves them away from getting too close. This scene is also contained in a speech bubble, uttered by a woman in the final scene. This woman is a middle-aged version of the eldest child from the previous scene. She is hosting a card game, and one of her guests has taken an interest in the little black bag displayed in a nearby cabinet. Another woman approaches the table with a tray of cheese and sausage.She holds a knife like Jack’s behind her back.
